Breast cancer is a disease that can affect people of any age, gender, or ethnicity. It occurs when the cells in the breast begin to grow abnormally, out of control and lead to tumors. There are several types of breast cancer that a person can be diagnosed with, each with its own unique characteristics that impact treatment and prognosis. Surgery is a common treatment option for breast cancer, and there are different types of procedures including mastectomy and lumpectomy. During surgery, sentinel and axillary lymph nodes may also be removed to determine if the cancer has spread. Staging, genes, pathology and post-surgery risks are additional considerations that patients need to be aware of as they navigate breast cancer treatment.
